A little history ...
The island owes its name to the triangular shape of its highest point, resembling a wooden wedge formerly used to stabilize the artillery. Some Mauritians believe that the name of the island derives its name from the military devices that would have been placed there for the defense of Mauritius in the French era.

A little history ...
Flat Island was discovered on 15 March 1801, by the Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Bory of Saint-Vincent who described it : "a beach of limestone makes it remarkable by far, and appears of a dazzling whiteness: the rest of its rocks is reddish or black"

Ilot Bernache / Ile d'Ambre

The Bernache Island and Ile d'Ambre are located a stone's throw from the village of Grand Gaube. A little history ...
The islet sometimes takes the name of Ile aux Bernaches. The origin of the name is quite controversial, some attribute it to a former colonists François de Bernage whose name would have been deformed in Bernache. Others associate the association with small seashells found on rocks and submerged marine ropes.

Round Island / Snake Island
